The beautiful Watermill Theatre, renowned for its picturesque setting and intimate auditorium, once again proves its unique ability to breathe fresh life into beloved classics with its compelling new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's iconic rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar. This Watermill Theatre production, by arrangement with The Really Useful Group Ltd, offers a raw, powerful, and deeply moving experience that resonates long after the final note fades.
The genius of this production lies in its masterful use of the Watermill's intimate venue (and garden!) The proximity to the performers creates an almost visceral connection to the unfolding drama, transforming the audience from mere spectators into silent witnesses to the final, tumultuous days of Jesus. The energy is palpable, the emotions raw and every vocal nuance and facial expression is magnified, drawing you deeper into the narrative.
Adding to the unique charm and immersive quality of this production is its innovative staging. The first half unfolds within the familiar confines of the main auditorium, drawing the audience into the initial tensions and burgeoning conflicts. However, after the interval, the show takes a truly inspired turn, moving outdoors to be witnessed around a flickering firepit against the stunning, natural backdrop of the Watermill grounds. This ingenious use of the venue is not merely a gimmick; it's a stroke of theatrical brilliance, creating an atmosphere that is both with truly something quirky and wonderfully different from the norm.
Further elevating the production's high calibre is the extraordinary versatility of its entire cast. Without exception, every performer seamlessly doubles up, showcasing their immense talents not only as powerful singers and dynamic dancers but also as accomplished actor-musicians, often playing multiple instruments throughout the show. This multi-talented approach elevates the production from a simple musical to a truly integrated theatrical experience, where every element is meticulously crafted and delivered with high-end precision. The sound, from the most delicate whisper to the full force of the rock anthems, is crystal clear, ensuring every lyric and note lands perfectly. Indeed, the entire production feels polished and meticulously executed, a testament to the dedication of everyone involved.
Leading the charge is Michael Kholwadia as Jesus, delivering a performance of profound vulnerability and soaring vocal power. His rendition of ‘Gethsemane’ is certainly a highlight. Parisa Shahmir as Mary Magdalene provides moments of tender solace amidst the escalating tension. Her version of ‘I Don't Know How to Love Him’ is delivered with a delicate sincerity that is both heartbreaking and beautiful, a true anchor of emotional depth. The supporting cast shines equally brightly. Samuel Morgan-Grahame delivers a delightfully flamboyant and surprisingly menacing portrayal of King Herod, providing a much-needed moment of dark levity. The ensemble, a cornerstone of any Jesus Christ Superstar production, are exceptional; their collective voices and movements creating a vibrant, often unsettling, backdrop to the central drama.
This production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Watermill Theatre is a triumph. It’s a testament to the enduring power of Tim Rice’s lyrics and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music, amplified by a cast that delivers truly exceptional performances within a setting that enhances every aspect of the storytelling. It’s an immersive, emotionally charged experience that reminds us why this rock opera continues to resonate across generations. Jesus Christ Super-5-star!
