This Christmas, the Old Joint Stock Theatre will present its first-ever family Christmas show — a heartwarming and magical musical reimagining of the beloved tale Pinocchio, playing at the Birmingham venue from 18-30 December.

Written by Holly Mallett (Andy and the Band, CBBC), this new adaptation promises festive fun, rich storytelling, and a production brimming with music and magic. Mallett’s musical theatre credentials are fast gaining recognition: her first show, Medusa’s First Kiss — a queer, punk-rock, teen reimagining of the Greek myth — was co-written with P Burton-Morgan and enjoyed a 10-week run at London’s Little Angel Theatre. Her second musical, The PEA & the Princess, a playful twist on the classic fairy tale has completed and London/International Run. Now, she brings her unique voice to Pinocchio, created especially for the Old Joint Stock Theatre, and directed by Emily Susanne Lloyd.

The magical and curious puppet Pinocchio wants to be a real boy, following him on his journey as he navigates his way through wondrous and treacherous landscapes, encountering a whole host of weird and wonderful characters along the way, all the while accompanied by a particularly curious cricket.

Expect soaring songs, lots of laughter, tears of joy and a VERY large Whale.

Artistic Director James Edge said: “After a year that will see us pushing the limits of what can be achieved professionally in our intimate fringe space with huge shows like Be More Chill and Bonnie & Clyde, we are excited to stage two brand new pieces of work for the Christmas season. We will be assembling an experienced and innovative creative team to bring this family classic to life with a festive twist.”
