Review: THE VERDICT, Lichfield Garrick - Tour

Written by Barry Reed and adapted by Margaret May Hobbs, The Verdict is a powerful courtroom thriller.

Frank Galvin is presented with one last chance to redeem himself and his career. It’s an open and shut medical malpractice case that no one believes he can win, but Frank refuses an out of court settlement because he believes that this cover up is worth exposing. Up against a top medical establishment, he’s taking on not only this case, but the entire legal system to court.

Jason Merrells plays Frank. It’s an honest portrayal whereby we are treated to a ten-minute pre show performance of Frank getting ready in his office. Merrells uses this to focus on the finer details of the character, drinking whisky far too early in the morning, with the withdrawal shakes of a seasoned alcoholic, adding a cinematic turn to a theatrical performance that expresses the grounding of the character, before the dialogue even kicks in.

Nigel Barber plays Concannon, the voice of the defence. He flawlessly depicts the stern faced, double crossing lawyer who will stop at nothing to win in court. A ruthless performance.

A mention must also go to Holly Jackson Walters as Natalie Stampanatto. Everything from her vocal intonations to her nervous hand wringing, portrays the anxious former Nurse to an impeccable level.

Unfortunately, there were a few sound and lighting issues on opening night, which did affect the feel of what should have been some tense moments, but that’s live theatre!

Directed and designed by Michael Lunney, the courtroom set is one of the most authentic pieces we have seen recently and transports the audience right in to the heart of the moment.

It is a gripping courtroom thriller and one that should not be missed by anyone who has an interest in navigating the twists and turns of the psychological kind.

Will Frank beat the corrupt system or will he leave a Mother and her young children without the compensation money they desperately need to survive?
