Review: SLEEPING BEAUTY, York Theatre Royal

A Christmas pantomime is a staple for many families, and if it isn’t already, Sleeping Beauty at York Theatre Royal should go straight to the top of your festive bucket list. The company of thirteen are incredible, delivering side splitting comedy and fabulous renditions of modern hits such as ‘HOT TO GO!’ by Chappell Roan.

Both the principal cast and ensemble are excellent, performing impressive dance numbers (choreographed by Hayley Del Harrison) and classic panto routines. There is falling off benches, plenty of audience participation - including a big red button that provides endless entertainment for the cast as well as the audience - and a brilliantly delivered “it’s behind you!” sequence led by Nurse Nellie (Robin Simpson).

Robin Simpson dazzles throughout, steering the show with confidence and bringing the audience along for the ride. Nurse Nellie is the quintessential pantomime dame: flirting with members of the audience, hosting a sing-off of Wham’s ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’, and showcasing some spectacular costumes (designed by Michael J Batchelor and Joey’s Dame Creations).

Nurse Nellie’s double act with the jester, Jangles (Tommy Carmichael), is hilarious, particularly during a Ghostbusters themed sequence. Simpson and Carmichael skilfully play off the set (designed by Terry Parsons, Michelle Marden, and Stuart Relph), drawing cackling laughter from the audience.

Carabosse (Jocasta Almgill), the youth-hating villain, is also a standout, capturing the audience’s attention despite the resounding boos when she appears on stage.

Staging elements further elevate the production, with Richard Williamson’s lighting design creating both heartfelt and humorous moments. The lighting grid framing the theatre’s proscenium arch adds visual interest to the stage, and is used effectively throughout the show to transition the space from a castle, to a classroom, to a creepy lair housing a fire breathing dragon.

This production provides great fun for all the family - we enjoyed it so much, we’ll have to see it again then, won’t we? Woo!

**** Four stars
