Review: SIX THE MUSICAL LIVE!, Universal Pictures

Already a huge hit on stage, SIX bursts onto the big screen with all of the glitter, energy, and sass that’s made it a fan favourite. Captured live at London’s Vaudeville Theatre in 2022, this film version of the musical offers a front-row seat to the concert-style show complete with powerhouse vocals, fierce choreography, and non-stop attitude.

The original West End Queens return in full force, each one commanding the screen with boldness and individuality. It’s no surprise they’ve become iconic in their roles with every performance oozing charisma and confidence, bringing these six historic women into a thoroughly modern spotlight. While every single Queen is spectacular, with outstanding vocals, emotion and sass, a special standout is Millie O'Connell as Anne Boleyn. Her humour, exaggeration, and total commitment to the chaos of the character has the audience laughing and loving every moment. It’s easy to see why each of these performers has become so well known for their roles in this show.

Seeing the production in this format means we get a whole new appreciation for the finer details. The costumes, which already dazzle from the stage, are shown in all their intricate glory. The artistry behind each outfit is astonishing, from the beading to the embellishments – every stitch contributes to the Queens’ distinct identities.

The cinematography adds a fresh perspective, though it’s not without its drawbacks. At times, the directors’ choice to cut between tight close-ups and angled shots can be a little distracting, pulling focus away from the full-stage action. There are moments when it feels like something is being missed just outside the frame. That said, in other areas – particularly during Parr’s emotional storytelling – the camera work enhances the experience, drawing the audience in and amplifying the show’s more poignant moments.

Musically, the show remains as tight and electrifying as ever. Every number is packed with clever lyrics, strong harmonies, and a healthy dose of humour. The live band on stage adds even more energy, and the Queens don’t miss a beat. The audience in the cinema can’t help but get swept up – you’ll want to clap, cheer, and maybe even get up and dance.

Although nothing can quite match the buzz of seeing SIX live in the theatre, this filmed version is a very close second. It’s an exhilarating, high-quality experience that captures the spirit of the show while offering new angles and insight for fans old and new.

Her-story hits the screen with sparkle, sass and six-star power!
