Review: OSCAR AT THE CROWN, The Crown (Sep 2025)

Step inside The Crown and you’re immediately pulled into another world, a shadowy underground bunker with neon light and glitter. It is part warehouse rave, part bunker hideout, and it is unlike any theatre setting we have set foot in before, and unlike any show we have seen.
Before the story begins, dancers slink through the crowd, drawing you towards the dance floor and setting the tone for a post-apocalyptic disco ruled by Oscar Wilde. In this imagined future, the internet has collapsed, pop culture reigns, and the last survivors worship celebrities and pop. There are no seats. The stage itself constantly moves, and the characters guide you to move with it, so you become another part of the bunker. The soundtrack is a thumping, high-energy mix, such as ‘Julie’, which is infectious.
Into this wild scene, Jan Sport steps in as Oscar Wilde, and their arrival is electric. Draped in glamour and attitude, Jan commands the room with a mix of sharp wit and sultry presence that fits the show’s spirit and attitude. Their vocals soar and are full diva power, and the ensemble feed off this energy well. The chemistry with the rest of the cast is strong, and it is easy to see why the production has extended Jan’s run through mid-November.
The plot can be slippery, more fever dream than straight narrative, but that is part of the thrill of this crazy show. Surrender to the chaos, the satire, the glitter and the end-of-the-world fabulousness.
Oscar At The Crown is a blast of disco, camp, and cultural critique, a theatre experience you inhabit and are absorbed into. Be ready to move, dance, and disappear into the bunker.
