Review: NOUGHTS AND CROSSES, Northern Stage - Tour

Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman, adapted by Sabrina Mahfouz, is a story rich with social commentary on race, gender, family relationships and, above all, what it means to belong. Esther Richardson’s direction brings this to life beautifully, making for an engaging and impactful watch.

Brianna Douglas as Sephy and Lewis Tidy as Callum lead the show well, and the chemistry between their characters is electric. Douglas’ irresistible charm and Tidy’s emotional vulnerability means the audience can’t help but root for these young star crossed lovers.

The cast delivers the highly physical moments with impressive precision, and sequences such as the shopping centre scene are particularly moving. The multi-rolling is executed seamlessly by the ensemble, with each character portrayed building a distinct connection with the audience.

Simon Kenny’s set is, whilst simple, highly engaging. Movable flaps are used to create a home, a school, an underground bunker and more, while the red drenching of set pieces emphasises the undertones of danger and discomfort that run through the show. The use of desks and chairs allows for some beautiful moments of choreography, and aids in the fluid transformation of the stage.

Ben Cowens’ lighting is equally striking, with the use of LED strips proving particularly effective. The recurring ombré lighting for the beach scenes is lovely, and its contrast with the more dramatic moments in the second half epitomises the struggle of peace and violence that the play’s action traces.

Si Cole and Ian William Galloway’s video is expertly incorporated into the action, creating moments of real impact and intensity. The cast interacts cleverly with the projections as they unfold, and the inclusion of news clips showcasing violence and unrest creates harrowing yet poignant opportunities for reflection.

This theatrical production of the seminal modern classic is skilfully realised, with the cast and creative team working seamlessly together to deliver a moving reflection on the struggle for acceptance.
