Review: Nikita Kuzmin: SUPERNOVA, New Wimbledon Theatre - Tour
Playing at the New Wimbledon Theatre at the weekend, Nikita Kuzmin shone in his second solo show, Supernova. The show is very much a team effort as Kuzmin is supported by a talented cast and special guest, Strictly pal Karen Hauer.
Supernova is packed with high energy, personal anecdotes and a range of dances highlighting Kuzmin’s skill. The staging is striking and the costumes vibrant, adding movement to a number of the acts. Kuzmin displays Ballroom, Latin and contemporary styles set to an upbeat array of musical numbers, such as ‘It’s a Sin’, ‘Shape of You, and ‘Whenever, Wherever’. The choreography is tight and the ensemble have the chance to display their skills individually as well as collectively.
Unlike Kuzmin’s first show Midnight Dancer, which followed a storyline, Supernova has a greater focus on Kuzmin himself, exploring the events which made him the successful dancer he is today. Kuzmin reveals a more personal side, including an emotional tribute to his late grandfather. The lack of a plot means that the show’s structure can feel a bit hectic at times, as the pace jumps from chat to dance and back again, but Nikita embraces this and has a great rapport with the audience, never taking himself too seriously.
The whole cast, led by dance captain Sasha Woodward, are incredibly strong, matching Kuzmin’s energy and charisma. The show’s highlight, a ‘Romeo and Juliet’ section at the opening of Act 2, includes an emotional duet performed by Kuzmin and Anna Karelina. Lois Faith provides powerful live vocals for the poignant dance.
Fans of Strictly Come Dancing and Kuzmin will be wowed by the talent and showmanship. Those less familiar with Kuzmin may crave a stronger storyline, but the skill and dedication on stage remain captivating. The outstanding cast make dancing look effortless in this uplifting, vibrant performance. A stunning display of artistry and passion, Supernova is an exhilarating celebration of dance.
