Review: EGGSTRACTION, Morpheus

Eggstraction 4.5 stars

Following the success of Spymaker for teens, Morpheus now bring us Eggstraction, an interactive, immersive show for families. Billed at ages 8-98, players must don their blindfolds to solve a puzzle in an interactive Zoom show.

When buying, you are sent a link and password to a Zoom meeting where you log in and meet your other players; utmost protection is taken and families will play by themselves, with no-one under the age of 18 allowed to partake in a game with adults that they don’t know.

Once logged in, Morpheus checks that your microphone is working and you can hear him and he can hear you. You are then instructed to don your blindfolds; this is great because your inhibitions about being amongst strangers leave you because you can’t see them.

The game revolves around your imagination and team work. Morpheus sets the scene, with a villain called the Easter Bunny (not the real one..a rip off!) is stealing Fabergé Eggs and you are called up to solve the mystery; being set the task of breaking into the museum and trying to steal it so that they can test their security for the egg.

You select one item from your locker to take with you to the museum, some are entertaining such as a rubber chicken, with some more practical like a pair of protective gloves. Once on your way, you are guided on how to break into the museum and search for the egg. There are roadblocks in your way at every turn and as a team, you suggest ideas on how to solve them and hopefully solve the mystery.

It is a brilliant concept, even if it is a little strange to be doing a show that you can’t see, but it allows your imagination to be fully inhibited with no distractions. It’s great for kids as it is ultimately a game and a way to keep their interest.

The script by Dominic McChesney is excellent and throughout the story is somewhat simple. The answers from the participants mean that Morpheus has to improvise and try to guide the participants towards the correct answers in a subtle way if he feels they’re off piste. With every show being different, this must be incredibly difficult for Morpheus and a credit to him for this.

This show is a great all-round family experience with lots of laughs to be had.
