Fringe review: DOUGH, Compagnie du Kaïros - Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Dough is an impressive piece of theatre played dynamically by its cast of three in the company, Compagnie du Kaïros. It is a highly energetic and stylised piece exploring the theme of money, money… and more money. The actors are evidently highly professional with great physical abilities and a range in different personas and accents which help bring this story to life.

Whist the piece is impressive in how much it does within one hour, the extremely high energy and hyper fast pacing has an opposite effect as an audience member. Bombarded with an endless range of personas every 60 seconds to an incredibly fast pace and heightened energy, the story is sometimes confusing to follow and at times, slightly draining.

Whilst investigating one man’s relationship with money, which he seems to never be able to have or keep, the overarching message is quite bleak and leaves one pondering on the endless cycle and trap that we fall into. Whilst the play is well acted and presented, with some very entertaining and comedic moments throughout, as a piece of writing, it doesn’t offer any new commentary on this theme, only confirming what too many of us unfortunately already know.

*** Three stars
