Nominations announced for 2022 Evening Standard Theatre Awards

The nominees have been announced for the 66th Evening Standard Theatre Awards, which return next month following a two year hiatus due to the pandemic.

The nominations include:

Best design: Tom Scutt for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre, Es Devlin for A Number at the Old Vic and The Crucible at the National Theatre, Felix Barrett, Livi Vaughan and Beatrice Minns for The Burnt City at One Cartridge Place, Lael Jellinek and Grace Laubacher for Oklahoma! at the Young Vic Theatre, and Tim Hatley for Back to the Future at the Adelphi Theatre/Life of Pi at Wyndham’s Theatre with Finn Caldwell.

Promising playwright: Tyrell Williams for Red Pitch at the Bush Theatre, Dipo Baruwa-Etti for An Unfinished Man at the Yard Theatre,
Waleed Akhtar for The P Word at the Bush Theatre, Igor Memic for Old Bridge at the Bush Theatre, and Bess Wohl for Camp Siegfried at the Old Vic Theatre.

Emerging talent: Isobel McArthur for Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) at the Criterion Theatre, Terique Jarrett for Daddy at the Almeida Theatre, Francis Lovehall for Red Pitch at the Bush Theatre, Lizzie Annis for The Glass Menagerie at the Duke of York’s Theatre, and Daniel Raggett for Anna X at the Harold Pinter Theatre.

Best director: Jamie Lloyd for The Seagull and Cyrano de Bergerac at the Harold Pinter Theatre, Daniel Fish and Jordan Fein for Oklahoma! at the Young Vic Theatre, Lynette Linton for Blues for an Alabama Sky for the National Theatre, Rebecca Frecknall for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre, and Katie Mitchell for Little Scratch at the Hampstead Theatre.

Best musical: Oklahoma! at the Young Vic Theatre, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre, Anything Goes at the Barbican Centre, Get Up Stand Up! at the Lyric Theatre, and Spring Awakening at the Almeida Theatre.

Best musical performance: Jessie Buckley for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre, Arinzé Kene for Get Up Stand Up! at the Lyric Theatre, Sutton Foster for Anything Goes at the Barbican Centre, Patrick Vaill for Oklahoma! at the Young Vic Theatre, and Marisha Wallace for Oklahoma! at the Young Vic Theatre.

Best actor: Paapa Essiedu for A Number at the Old Vic Theatre, James McAvoy for Cyrano de Bergerac at the Harold Pinter Theatre, Shubham Saraf for The Father and the Assassin at the National Theatre, Lennie James for A Number at the Old Vic Theatre, and Giles Terera for Blues for an Alabama Sky at the National Theatre.

Best actress: Jodie Comer for Prima Facie at the Harold Pinter Theatre, Samira Wiley for Blues for an Alabama Sky at the National Theatre, Indira Varma for The Seagull at the Harold Pinter Theatre, Ronke Adekoluejo for Blues for An Alabama Sky at the National Theatre, and Sheila Atim for Constellations at the Vaudeville Theatre.

Best play: Best of Enemies by James Graham at the Young Vic Theatre, Indecent by Paula Vogel at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Red Pitch by Tyrell Williams at the Bush Theatre, The Father and the Assassin by Anupama Chandrasekhar at the National Theatre, and The Mirror and the Light by Hilary Mantel and Ben Miles at the Gielgud Theatre.
