New British musical BANG! seeks development partners

Writer and composer Toby Aspin is seeking producers, investors and development partners for BANG!, an original British musical that reimagines the events surrounding the Gunpowder Plot through romance, comedy, political intrigue and a fully recorded concept album.

Set in London in 1605, BANG! blends historical fact with fictional twists, placing a love triangle at the heart of one of Britain's most famous conspiracies. Francis Tresham and Guy Fawkes are close friends united by faith and circumstance, but both are hopelessly in love with Maria – Guy's wife and the great love of Francis's life.

As Catholic families come under increasing political pressure and King James I struggles to maintain order in a divided nation, personal loyalties become entangled with matters of state. But this is not a conventional retelling of history. BANG! playfully reimagines historical figures, including a flamboyant King James I who seems far more interested in cultivating his friendship with William Shakespeare than in saving his kingdom from disaster.

With a mix of bawdy ballads and soul-searching love songs spanning rock, jazz and Motown, with dashes of plainsong and harpsichord, BANG! balances humour with romance and emotional drama set against a backdrop of faith, friendship and treason.

Conceived as a continuous 65-minute narrative score, the project is supported by a completed script/book and a fully recorded concept album. The material is now available for industry consideration as the creative team seeks to move the project towards workshop, development and full-scale theatrical production.

Part historical adventure, part romantic comedy and part political thriller, BANG! offers a fresh, irreverent and emotionally engaging take on the story behind Bonfire Night.

The script is written. The songs are recorded. The next step is bringing BANG! to life on stage.
