National Theatre’s original film ROMEO & JULIET to be screened in cinemas

The National Theatre has today announced that its critically acclaimed original film Romeo & Juliet will be screened in cinemas on Tuesday 28 September, marking the first time the film will be available on the big screen.

Starring Josh O'Connor (The Crown, God's Own Country) and Jessie Buckley (Chernobyl, Judy) as the titular characters, the film will be available to screen across the UK and Ireland.

The piece is directed by Simon Godwin and adapted for screen by Emily Burns. It was filmed across 17 days in the venue’s Lyttelton theatre while it was closed due the pandemic, bringing to life the remarkable backstage spaces of the National Theatre.

The cast also includes Ella Dacres (Peta), Fisayo Akinade (Mercutio), Deborah Findlay (Nurse), Tamsin Greig (Lady Capulet), Ellis Howard (Sampson), Lloyd Hutchinson (Lord Capulet), David Judge (Tybalt), Adrian Lester (Prince), Alex Mugnaioni (Paris), Lucian Msamati (Friar), Shubham Saraf (Benvolio) and Colin Tierney (Lord Montague).

The creative team comprises Director of Photography Tim Sidell, with production and costume designer Soutra Gilmour, movement director Jonathan Goddard and Shelley Maxwell, fight director Kate Waters and composer Michael Bruce.

The Romeo & Juliet soundtrack will also be released digitally worldwide on Friday 6 August.
