Interview: Rhiannon Chesterman on playing Elizabeth Benning in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN

If you're looking for a monstrously fun night out this autumn then Manchester's Hope Mill Theatre has you covered with a run of Mel Brooks’ iconic Young Frankenstein The Musical. We spoke to Rhiannon Chesterman who plays Elizabeth Benning to find out more about the spooky goings-on.

How does Young Frankenstein reinvent and subvert the original Frankenstein story?

Young Frankenstein is a comedic interpretation of the original Frankenstein story. It’s light-hearted and humorous which is in contrast to the more serious tone of the original Frankenstein novel. It’s a parody of the classic horror exaggerating and poking fun with satirical themes including societal expectations and scientific hubris.

Can you tell us a bit about your character Elizabeth Benning?

She’s fabulous! She knows exactly what she wants. She’s not a typical damsel in distress. She is willing to take charge of situations. Her relationship with Frederick is more of a social arrangement than a passionate romance.

What's your favourite moment to perform in Young Frankenstein?

I have three main big moments and it’s hard to choose between them all. They are all gifts to play. I think potentially ‘Surprise’ is my favourite. I have been off stage for most of Act 1 and then I arrive back in Act 2 with a bang!

When starring in a musical comedy, do you find that each show is different or do you stick to the same comic timing?

Oh, every show is completely different. For me anyway. I love comedy but any time I have to describe or analyse it, I struggle. As cliche as it sounds, you have to just feel it and play the truth of the scene. The comedy comes from the characters not knowing that they are funny. Also, you’ve got to be brave enough to indulge in the silences.

You're returning to Peter Pan in pantomime this winter. What do you like most about panto?

I am! My favourite thing about panto is how much joy it brings the audiences. You can’t leave a panto not feeling at least a little bit joyful. Seeing all the children’s faces is my favourite thing. I also enjoy the challenge of completing the crazy schedule.

How would you encourage people to book tickets for Young Frankenstein?

If you are interested in laughing until you cry, I would recommend booking tickets. It’s perfect for this spooky time of year. This company is also full of people at the top of their game which is thrilling to watch!

Young Frankenstein plays at Hope Mill Theatre from 10 October - 30 November, with further info here.
