Interview: Lauren Jones on the THE ADDAMS FAMILY, UK Tour

They're creepy and they're kooky… and they're touring the UK! The Addams Family, The Musical Comedy is visiting Birmingham, Leicester, Salford, Canterbury and Blackpool this summer. We spoke to Lauren Jones, who stars as Wednesday Addams, to find out how it feels to be part of the spookiest family around…

What can audiences look forward to in The Addams Family?

A kooky and spooky time, where “normal” is totally overrated. It’s a show where audiences can embrace their weirdness and the darker side of life in a fun way. Not only is the music amazing but so is the team and I can’t wait for everyone to hear their killer vocals and dance moves to raise the dead

How do you put your own spin on a well-known character like Wednesday?

I’m a research nerd, so I’ve been diving into the TV series, the films, comics and playlists. Once I have that foundation of really understanding who Wednesday is, I like to go outside the box and add my own touches. Little things that haven’t been seen before, but still feel very Wednesday. Because when you know a character inside and out, you can start imagining how she'd react in situations we haven’t seen yet and that’s where the fun begins.

What do you like most about performing in the comedy genre?

It’s different every night. Comedy depends so much on audience reactions and energy. That unpredictability keeps it fresh. I’ve always loved making people laugh or even just smile. Comedy gives you that connection in real time and it makes you forget your troubles.

You recently starred in the Scissorhandz musical at Southwark Playhouse Elephant. What did you take away from that experience?

The Scissorhands costume (Kidding... kind of). Honestly, it taught me to be more comfortable with improv. I usually like to lock in my performance, really stick to what I’ve rehearsed and be present with my co-stars. But because Scissorhandz had a more concert-style format, it gave me the freedom to break the fourth wall, play with the audience, and live in the moment a bit more. It was chaotic, in the best way.

Are there any other classic movies or TV shows you'd love to see turned into a musical?

About Time would be amazing. It has such a beautiful message, and it’s one of those films I go back to every year. I think you could have a lot of fun with the music, especially as the protagonist flips between the past and present. Also, Coraline. The visuals, the story, the creepiness, need I say more? And I already have the costume, because I cosplay in my spare time. So, you know... casting department, call me.
