Interview: Hana Ichijo on reprising her role as Lucinda in West End transfer of INTO THE WOODS

It's time to return to the land of fairytales this September, as the Olivier Award-winning revival of Into The Woods transfers to the West End after its run at the Bridge Theatre. We spoke to Hana Ichijo, who is returning to the role of Lucinda, to find out more.

How does it feel to be returning to Into the Woods for its West End transfer?

Exciting! It’s been so nice to see all the new cast interpretations of the characters. Also, this is actually my West End debut! I love working in town, everything’s so close by!!

What drew you to the character of Lucinda, one of Cinderella's stepsisters?

Well, honestly, it was the part my agent submitted me for! But I’ve loved spending time with my other sister Florinda, played by Gabrielle Lewis-Dodson. We are like twins, we’re so similar and I love coming into work and laughing with her every day. Thank you to our casting director Stuart Burt for casting us! I’m so happy I met her!

Do you find it more fun to play a villainous character or a heroine?

It’s funny, because arguably all the characters in the woods aren’t stereotypical heroines, they are all selfish to a degree, and would do anything to get their own personal wishes. Through playing a ‘villain’, and through covering Cinderella (who I have discovered is much more quirky and has a lot more guts than your typical heroine), I’ve learnt that playing strength is always more interesting than a typical helpless ingenue. So, to answer your question, it’s really fun to play a villain, but I also love playing a heroine that has more balls than you’d expect!

Why do you think Stephen Sondheim's songs are so beloved and enduring?

Because you’re forced to listen to every word, as both an actor and as an audience member. It’s almost like you can never relax; the songs often go where you don’t expect them to, and I love that. It’s a challenge every night, and in turn, you can never get bored of his music. There’s always something new to find in each song.

Do you have any dream roles that you'd like to play in the future?

I’m a legit girl; I love the classics. I’d love to play one of those classic old-school female roles but find some strength in it.

Into The Woods plays at the Noël Coward Theatre from 22 September, with tickets available here.
