Interview: Frances Mayli McCann on performing in Don Black’s FROM THE HEART

After a sell-out run last year, multi-award-winning lyricist Don Black's From The Heart is returning to the West End this October, featuring brand new songs alongside many of his much-loved classics. We spoke to cast member Francis Mayli McCann, star of Bonnie & Clyde and The Great Gatsby, to find out more.
How did you come to be involved with From The Heart?
I got involved with From The Heart thanks to a number of people. Firstly, I met Don Black during Bonnie and Clyde; I’ve worked with Nick Winston, our director many times; and with Nick Barstow, our musical director. I also did a project with our producer Neil a few years ago. So it’s nice to be coming into the show and seeing some familiar faces.
Which Don Black song speaks to you the most?
I guess it has to be ‘Dyin’ Ain’t So Bad’. I have been singing that song, even before playing Bonnie, and it’s always been favourite of mine. During rehearsals for Bonnie and Clyde, Don actually told us how he wasn’t quite content with the lyrics of the song, so he took a walk around the block to clear his head, and came back to Frank with lyrics written down on a napkin.
From The Heart has been described as Black’s love letter to the New York cabaret scene. Do you have a favourite city, and what makes it special to you?
I also love New York, I’ve visited many times. But earlier this year, I went to Tokyo for the first time. It was at the top of my list for so long and I absolutely loved it. The food, the culture, the shopping. The people are so respectful, it’s all so clean and it’s just so cool! I can’t wait to go back.
How does it feel to be returning to the Garrick Theatre after starring in Bonnie & Clyde there?
It’s so nice to be coming back to the Garrick with a different show. It’s really special to be returning to sing more of Don Black’s lyrics.
What’s next?
I’m actually doing some solo concerts next, something I’ve not done before which is nerve wracking and exciting at the same time. I get to pick the set list but I have to play myself. Then in December, I’m singing songs from the movies with the Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
