Interview: Emily Lane on playing title role in ANNE BOLEYN THE MUSICAL
This summer will see the world premiere of Anne Boleyn The Musical, directed by Roxana Silbert, and it couldn't be happening at a more iconic venue. The production will play in the grounds of Anne's childhood home, Hever Castle in Kent. We spoke to Emily Lane who stars as Anne Boleyn, to find out how it feels to portray this complex historical figure at the very place where her journey began.
What drew you to the role of Anne Boleyn?
History was always my favourite subject at school so when the opportunity came up to play Anne Boleyn, I simply had to say yes! She remains such a pivotal, some would say controversial, historical figure. As an actor, being able to step into her shoes and delve into her mind and story was something I knew I wanted to experience.
Does Anne Boleyn the Musical reveal new aspects of Anne that audiences may not be aware of?
The piece begins by Anne addressing the audience, inviting them to listen to her story. “For though they tried to silence me, I still have more to say because even if it seems like the fight is over, it might be just beginning”. We then track back to 1513, her childhood, where she spent many years in Europe getting the best education from very powerful women - a time that was so important in building the foundation of the woman she was. I believe this play gives an audience an intimate and honest insight into Anne, not only as a Queen, but as a wife and mother and the difficult decisions and sacrifices she had to make along the way.
How does it feel to be performing at Anne's childhood home, and how will the setting of Hever Castle be incorporated into the show?
It really is a one-off experience. The castle will act as the stage’s backdrop, with the stunning castle grounds surrounding it. A specially constructed outdoor auditorium has been built where the audience will listen to the show through headsets, creating an epic yet intimate experience. You may even spot a few horses…
What sort of music can audiences expect to hear in the original score?
You can expect to hear a mix of pop/classical/film music. Think Disney meets epic pop!
What is your favourite part of the show to perform?
One of my favourite parts to perform is the Masked Ball in Act 1. It’s the first public appearance Anne has made since her return from Europe and she makes quite the impression. She stuns the crowd, Henry in particular, with her vivacious energy and wild dance moves. The whole court then throw themselves into a dance, led by Anne. It’s a really fun moment where the whole company get to let loose and party together!
Anne Boleyn The Musical plays at Hever Castle from 2-30 August, with further info here.
