It was announced last night that Emma Thompson will play Miss Trunchball in the upcoming musical film adaptation of Matilda.

Ralph Fiennes was previously tipped for the iconic role but Director Matthew Warchus has since revealed that the part had been reconceived to be played by a woman.

After a nationwide search, it has also been confirmed that 11-year old newcomer Alisha Weir will take the title role of Matilda.

The film is currently in pre-production stages with over 200 children currently rehearsing to play Matilda’s classmates. Filming is scheduled to commence at Shepperton Studios in April 2021.
