BYMT to present THEO IN BETWEEN at Leeds’ Carriageworks Theatre
BYMT marks its Carriageworks Theatre Leeds debut with new musical Theo in Between from 22-23 August.
With a 90s-inspired classical-contemporary score by Jordan Li-Smith and heartfelt storytelling from Gareth Mattey, Theo In Between is a musical theatre coming-of-age celebration of gender identity, found community, and anyone who has ever felt a little bit in between.
It’s 1999 and the quaint Northern town of Dulberry prepares to deliver their best Harvest Festival yet, but Theo is focused on something else: will finding their absent father help them understand what it means to be a ‘man’? Stuck in between the expectations of their town, their friends, and their Mum, Theo sets out to find their place in the world and work out who they are, and who they want to be.
The cast of 37 young performers is directed by Dean Johnson, with a creative team including choreographer Rhys Wilkinson, and designer Lu Herbert.
Gareth Mattey and Jordan Li Smith said: “We were really lucky to make our connection with BYMT last year and it’s been wonderful having their support in building this LGBTQ+ led show, creating it, workshopping it and sharing it with the people of Leeds. We knew pretty early on in writing the show that we were making it for a theatre in Leeds and for a Northern audience so we’re excited for the performances at Carriageworks this August!”
